Video Interview: James Cosmo, Kate Dickie and Brian Pettifer discuss Donkeys

Friday 8 October 2010 saw the first non-festival screening of Morag McKinnon's new film Donkeys, an event which saw actors James Cosmo, Kate Dickie and Brian Pettifer arrive at the Glasgow Film Theatre (GFT) to celebrate its release, alongside the film's director, Morag McKinnon.

Donkeys is the semi-sequel to Andrea Arnold's 2006 film, Red Road, and both films are part of the Advance Party Trilogy which asks that each film adheres to a set of guidelines, allowing the use of the same actors and characters in different films while ensuring various details are altered each time.

Colin McLaren's script sees Alfred (Brian Cosmo) attempting to reconcile with his estranged daughter, Jackie (Kate Dickie), just as another complication arrives in the form of Stevie (Martin Compston), fresh out of jail and with a stronger connection to Alfred than either might have expected. Brian Pettifer co-stars as Alfred's best friend, Brian, and the pair form a memorable double act in this very funny and moving film.

I caught up with Cosmo, Dickie and Pettifer at the GFT after the screening on Friday and found them in buoyant mood, something reflected in the video below.

In the interview, Brian Pettifer explains how he came to be cast in the film after a number of auditions, while James Cosmo discussed how the script's unique mix of emotions affected his performance and that he'd happily make another film in the trilogy. Finally, Kate Dickie explains that she is contracted to all three Advance Party films and that she has no idea what is expected of her in each film until the script arrives.
